Long Term Conditions

Herschel Medical Centre’s multidisciplinary team is here to help our patients manage any long term conditions they may have by providing ongoing support with regular reviews and follow up.

Diabetes Clinic

Diabetic reviews are scheduled annually. At this review you should make sure that investigations including bloods and urine are done prior to seeing the Doctor or Specialist Nurse. If unsure please check at the time of making the appointment.

Please also remember to tell us of your telephone number(s) in case we need to contact you for any reason after your review.


Cervical Screening

Cervical Screening (smear tests) is undertaken by the Practice Nurses.

The practice is currently offering Saturday morning appointments for cervical screening on the following dates:

  • Saturday 26th October 2019
  • Saturday 9th November 2019
  • Saturday 23rd November 2019

Child Health

For routine childhood immunisations, please call the surgery to make an appointment.

Our baby clinics are held on Monday and Thursday afternoons at the surgery with the Practice Nurse. There is also a Nurse Practitioner available if you have any concerns about your baby’s or your own health.

Please remember to bring the red book to the baby clinic so that we can keep your baby’s record up to date. If you have recently registered with the surgery from abroad, please bring any previous immunisation documents with you.

If your baby is unwell, with a temperature of 38c or higher, please postpone your appointment until he/she is fully recovered.

Family Planning / Sexual Health

Our Practice Nurses are all fully trained to advise regarding contraception. All methods of contraception will be discussed, to help you choose which is the most appropriate on for you.

Nexplanon implant and IUCD/IUS coil fitting is available at the surgery following consultation with one of our Family Planning trained nurses.

Emergency Contraception is available from the Garden Clinic at Upton Hospital, NHS walk in Centre at Upton Hospital. Some local pharmacies also provide emergency contraception.

Chlamydia/Gonorrhoea swabs can be taken at the surgery. For a full STI screening, the surgery advises attendance at the Garden Clinic, Upton Hospital - 01753 635302.

Smoking Cessation Services

Around 65% of smokers say they want to stop smoking, but most believe they are unable to. However, around half of all smokers eventually manage to give up.

The primary service for people who want to quit smoking is the NHS Stop Smoking Service (NHS SSS). The NHS SSS offer a range of free treatments, advice and support for people who want to quit smoking, and it has a good track record of success. It is estimated that since its launch in 2000, the NHS SSS has saved 70,000 lives.

Travel Immunisations

Safe pre and post travel advice is available from our Practice Nurses. For a travel risk health assessment and advice about immunisations and anti-malarial treatment required, please make an appointment at least 6 weeks before you intend to travel to provide full protection.

Please note, some vaccinations may not be available on the NHS. Therefore, a charge for the vaccination may be indicated. You will be advised of this during your consultation.
